Time’s Ornament Necklace

It is a small watch, unremarkable at first glance — the sort one might pass over in a drawer of trinkets or catch glinting on a widow’s wrist. But the metal is worn in the way that only constant touch can manage, and the hands no longer move. Some say it stopped the moment he died. Others say it never ticked at all.

It was found in the lining of a travel coat, long after the war had ended, tucked into a stitched-shut pocket as though hidden deliberately. The name engraved within had been scratched out — not by time, but by someone determined to erase it. The chain that now holds it was pieced together later, with fragments of bronze and silver from an old armoury box, like it was meant to carry weight without being obvious.

Now it rests against the skin, cool and silent, but never truly still. A relic of someone else's time, someone else's story, whose final hour clings to the metal like a ghost refusing to let go.
