The Mysterious Find

Rowan doesn’t go into the woods looking for anything specific, but they notice what others don’t. A shape half-hidden in the dirt, something with edges that don’t quite match the rest of the forest floor. It fits in the palm easily, rough, unfamiliar, but not out of place. They turn it over once, then pocket it.

By the time it hangs at the centre of the necklace, it has changed — not in shape, not really, but in weight. The copper catches along its edges, settling into every ridge and hollow like it was always meant to be there. The pale pieces along the line soften nothing; they only draw the eye back to the centre, again and again.

Rowan still doesn’t know what it is, but does that even matter?
