Shorebound

It’s made on the last evening before departure, when the ship is already loaded and the ropes have been checked twice over. Someone sits on an overturned crate near the waterline, working the links together by hand, slow and deliberate, while the others move around them in the half-light. The small octopus is added last, its shape pressed into place as if it belongs to the chain more than anything else does.

“It’s for you,” one of them says, not looking up. It's not an explanation, nor an apology, merely a statement that sits between them, as steady as the tide pulling out.

In the morning, the ship leaves without ceremony. No crowd, no call, just the sound of wood shifting against water and the low creak of rope under strain. Arden stands on the dock, the chain resting at the base of their throat, the weight of it settling in a way that feels unfamiliar at first.

Later, when the harbour quiets and the tide turns again, the pendant moves slightly with each step along the shoreline. Not enough to be noticed by anyone else. Just enough to mark that something once belonged to the sea, and chose — or was made — to stay.
