Edmund keeps her waiting just long enough to be noticed. He steps onto the gravel with his gloves in hand, already scanning the table as the conversations around it shift, just slightly, to make room for him. Adelaide does not stand. She lifts her teacup instead and lets him cross the last stretch alone. The necklace at her throat settles as she turns her head, the teal stone catching the light between them.
“You’ve read the terms,” she says.
Edmund stops at the edge of the table and folds his gloves once, then again. “I have,” he replies, his gaze flicking briefly to the red drops along the chain as she sets her cup down. They move with her wrist, with her breath. Porcelain clinks softly nearby. No one looks at them directly.
“Then we understand each other,” Adelaide says, reaching for the sugar tongs before he can answer. The chain dips forward with the motion, the central stone knocking once against the edge of the saucer. Edmund’s eyes follow it, then return to her face. He nods, once, as she drops a single cube into his cup and stirs it for him, uninvited.
