It once clung to a wall long since surrendered to the earth — stone fractured, roots threading through mortar, the scent of damp earth thick with the memory of rain. No footsteps passed there anymore. Only the ivy remained, weaving itself through ruin as if mending what time had broken.
Years blurred into seasons, seasons into silence. Birds nested and were gone; moss crept over the names carved in stone until they were unreadable. Still the ivy grew. Not wild, not tame — something older than either. When the frost came, it did not wither. When the wall crumbled, it held fast.
And then, one day, only this leaf was left. The rest had fallen to dust, but this one lingered, stubborn in its refusal to disappear. Copper remembers what green once knew — the weight of still air before rain, the warmth of light through cracks in the canopy, the ache of holding on when there’s nothing left to hold.
